GHG & Microplastic Regulation

A key part of Ecovia’s mission is doing our part in helping solve the global problems of climate change and environmental waste.

Our products and processes are designed to decrease the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions we add to the environment. The most common GHGs are released during the processing of fossil fuels. At Ecovia, we use no fossil fuel-based raw materials. By focusing on renewable feedstocks, we improve the environmental footprint of our company and that of our customers.

We are also actively engaged in the fight against microplastics, an emerging global environmental crisis. Tiny plastic particles less than five millimeters in size, microplastics are intentionally used in cosmetics and other personal care products as scrubbing or exfoliating agents. They are also created when larger pieces of plastic, such as those used in packaging, break down. Microplastics, which are nonbiodegradable, ultimately end up in landfills, oceans, rivers, and other ecosystems threatening wildlife, human health, and biodiversity.

International bodies like the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the European Union have begun advocating for stronger policies to tackle microplastic pollution. UNEP’s “Clean Seas” campaign urges nations to reduce plastic waste, while the EU’s Plastics Strategy sets ambitious goals to reduce plastic pollution by 2030.

Countries like Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom have taken steps to regulate microplastics in products such as personal care items, detergents, and synthetic textiles. Some nations have introduced bans on microbeads in cosmetics and other consumer products.

Our goal at Ecovia is to support these efforts and actions by creating sustainable alternatives to products which use and generate microplastic waste.
